Getting to Know Girls Inc.

Here at THINX, our giveback is crucial to our mission of creating social change — a wheelhouse that one of our *amazing* partners, Girls Inc., has been owning for a long time. Providing funding to mission-aligned partners is just one of the ways we pay it forward, and we’re proud to contribute to their motivating work.

Girls Inc. is a nonprofit that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy. They were actually founded waaay back in 1864 as a resource for young American women after the Civil War. More than ever, girls need communities where they are encouraged to be themselves and provided the resources they need to thrive.

While they are attuned to the unique challenges that girls face today, and evolve their initiatives accordingly, their core values haven’t changed. For over a century, Girls Inc. has established itself as a safe space for girls to build sisterhood, prioritize their health, and educate themselves on the subjects that will empower them to grow into independent women.

Interested in learning more about issues that impact girls? They have a comprehensive library of resources on their website, which covers economic literacy, sexuality, and mentoring in smart, simple terms. For reference, remember that only 24 states mandate sex education, and only 13 states require it to be scientifically accurate — so education on these topics is very much needed.

Right now, their network serves school-aged girls at over 1,400 sites in 400 cities across the United States and Canada. With a focus on long-lasting mentoring relationships, pro-girl environments, and research-based programming, their educational programs (both at Girls Inc. centers, and in partnership with schools) equip girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers.

Learning from their experiences with the girls they work with and their families, Girls Inc. also fights to dismantle systemic barriers in their way by advocating for relevant policies, and by directing programming aimed at the girls who need the most resources. Currently, their expansion efforts are focused on fostering the natural potential of girls in underserved and low-income communities, in hopes that more girls than ever can benefit from the Girls Inc. experience.

We’re proud to partner with them, to help achieve their goal of increasing the number of girls they reach by at least 10% every year.

As you may have already noticed on our site, starting on Giving Tuesday, we’re donating $5 from our *limited edition* GRL PWR Sport undies to Girls Inc. and their empowering work. Check out the collab—and snag a pair for yourself—here.

Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity to continue in the Thanksgiving spirit, and to give back to the communities you care about. How did you celebrate Giving Tuesday this year?
