If you’re going to take advice from anyone, shouldn’t it be Dame Helen Mirren? A true veteran of the business who still continues to shine in every film project she partakes in, Mirren is a Hollywood legend, beloved by all who know her on screen and off. Mirren recently sat down with Refinery 29 to talk about her new role as Death in 2017’s Collateral Beauty, a role she plays with great cheer and chipperness. When Arianna Davis asks Mirren her advice to young women who want long, successful careers, Mirren's had an answer almost instantly--and it’s damn good.

So here are her secrets--you ready?

1. Be on time!

I liked this one, naturally, because I’m a Virgo and am 15 minutes early to absolutely everything. This often leads to a lot of fake texting and data streaming, but the great Dame reminds us that it’s best to be timely to professional commitments. I thought about this when I had a difficult time parting from my warm bed this morning to prepare for a walk to the train in the NYC December chill-- but Mirren’s voice forced me to spring into action. It also reminded me that I’d like to watch The Queen again, maybe this weekend.

2. Don’t Be an Asshole

This is a biggie. While I hope none of us would choose to be an asshole, I’m sure there are moments where we lack self awareness and think we’re in the right, when we may be in the wrong. I vow on my DVD of Raising Helen to actively (try to--because we all have moments, right?), not be an asshole. This includes holding the door open for others, sharing my food with friends, and not coming to blows when close friends say that Madonna isn’t talented (healthy debates only.)

3. Work Toward Financial Independence

“Work toward financial independence, if that's possible, because it gives you a freedom. It's a difficult thing to do, I know, but save your own money. I think that's very important." Dame Mirren is right. Saving money can be tough, especially when you walk by not one, but 4 different cafes on the way to work (a 3 dollar cup adds up.) Supporting yourself in the present and saving for the future brings independence and satisfaction, and I’ll think of Mirren next time I’m desperate to stop for a 5$ iced latte I don’t necessarily need (unless I’ve had a particularly bad day, in which case, I’m slurpin’ one of those down ASAP.)

Watch Mirren’s video here-- we hope it brings you the same joy and determination for 2017 as it does for us!
